The Drawing Machine

In 1807, Joseph Fourier claimed any curve could be rebuilt from nothing but circles turning on circles. He was right. Draw something below — anything, in one stroke — and watch a chain of spinning circles redraw it perfectly, forever.

How it works

Your stroke is sampled into complex numbers — each point x + iy. A discrete Fourier transform, computed right here in your browser the moment you lift the pen, splits that path into rotating vectors:

Xk = Σn=0N−1 xn · e−i2πkn/N

Each term is one circle: its radius is the magnitude of Xk, its starting angle the phase, and it spins at k revolutions per loop. Stack them tip-to-tail, biggest first, and the end of the chain traces your drawing. Slide the circles knob down and watch the reconstruction blur into a ghost of itself — that is lossy compression, happening before your eyes. JPEG, MP3 and streaming video all live on this exact trick.
